WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station, presents the first-ever children’s podcast festival April 28-29, 2018 at Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts. The Mega Awesome Super Huge Wicked Fun Podcast Playdate features some of today’s most popular “kidcasts” including WHYY’s Eleanor Amplified, WBUR’s Circle Round, Gimlet’s Story Pirates, Minnesota Public Radio’s Brains On!, Vermont Public Radio’s But Why and National Public Radio’s Wow in the World.
“This is a great way to introduce kids and families to not just podcasts, but to new ways of storytelling,” said Eleanor Amplified creator John Sheehan, Manager of On-Demand Audio & Podcasts at WHYY, and formerly a producer of Fresh Air with Terry Gross. “Shows like Eleanor Amplified are entertaining and informative while sparking laughter and conversation, perfect for listening during long car rides with the family.”
To kick off screen-free week, The Mega Awesome Super Huge Wicked Fun Podcast Playdate will feature live performances with actors, musicians and producers that delve into a wide array of topics such as the science of where dreams come from or why animals hibernate, the excitement of the International Space Station, an action-packed radio theater adventure into the Amazon, the lessons of international folk tales and the joy of kids’ comedy sketches.
“Like so many parents, I’m always trying to find alternatives to screen time,” said Jessica Alpert, managing producer for program development at WBUR who is organizing the festival with Amy Macdonald, WBUR’s Director of Community Engagement. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with some of today’s most popular kid’s podcasts to bring the audio experience to the stage in front of a live audience. With a great diversity of topics, themes, and formats, we’re looking forward to providing an awesome experience for kids—and their grown-ups!”
Each performance will be recorded live for an upcoming podcast episode. Nearly 4,000 kids and their caregivers will have the opportunity to see the performances over two days.
